About

I'm going to New Zealand.

Instead of flying, I'm taking 38 days to make the journey 'overland' as much as possible. My route is inspired by the Trans-Siberian Railway, which runs through 8 time zones from one side of Russia to the other. I plan to take the 'Trans-Mongolian' branch of this railway which eventually takes me to Beijing.

From China things will be a little less straightforward- but with a combination of trains, buses, speedboats, tuk-tuks and some walking, I hope to make it to Bangkok in time to catch a flight to Darwin (Northern Australia). The final leg of the journey is then to cross the outback on the back of a Greyhound, before flying the final hop over to Auckland, where I will stick around for a year to climb, kayak, paraglide, ski, surf... study physics at the University there.

This blog is mostly for myself, as I'm quite forgetful and I will forget everything I notice on this journey if I don't take some notes. It's also for you, however, to check I'm sticking to the plan and not disappearing off into the Mongolian desert, to enjoy reading or looking at the pictures, and maybe even to inspire your next adventure.

Finally, let me say a huge thank you to life for giving me such an exciting opportunity to go out and see the world. By life, I of course mean my whole family and my wonderful friends. I will miss you! Thank you also to University of Edinburgh for fixing up my exchange in New Zealand, and to The Man in Seat 61 who made the planning of this journey a whole lot easier.
